Tweeter Karma. Sure hope it doesn’t come back to bite me in my …
I was a bit reluctant to do so, but I actually unfollowed some accounts on Twitter recently that still follow View PR. To my defence, they were all account that updated last somewhere between 50 and 200 days ago! I think it’s save to say that the life is out of them. We all know Twitter is about the here and now and, like all social media, needs TLC (Time, Labour and Content).
I used Tweeter Karma to do the dirty job for me. A very sufficient tool, that shows you: who you follow, who follows you, who’s a mutual connection and when everybody last updated. The last feature, for me, was the reason to decide to hang in there just a little longer with some accounts; thinking i hadn’t seen any tweets by them for ages in the timeline, to find out on Tweeter Karma it was only 1 day ago or less they last updated.
That unfortunately proves how selective I browse the timeline. It’s not a complete shocker of course, when you follow 600+ accounts many of them originating from overseas. Social media has made the world a small place, but simply can’t change the time difference between countries. Sure, there are ways to automate your account guaranteeing a constants flow of 24/7 tweets. But who (not what)communicates non-stop? Like i already wrote, to me, Twitter is about the here and now. So, I’ve simply added a few extra columns in Tweetdeck to prevent missing out on interesting tweets by overseas accounts.
Anyway, by the time of writing this post View PR’s stats are: 241 only following, 382 mutual friends, 118 only followers. I have unfollowed circa 75 account, still leaving me with a higher rate of following accounts, then followers accounts. This never has and still doesn’t bother me. I have always seen Twitter as a source of information about anything, from everywhere. And while making up the balans i can only conclude that after starting up the ViewPR Twitter account 1,5 years ago, i’m very pleased with the diversity of followers and their loyalty. Sure hope they stay that way…
Targeted followers on twitter lead to targeted spammers
There’s always a downside to an upside, I’m talking about spammers. The more selective and consistent you are about what you tweet, the more visible you are for those you don’t want to attract. So lately ViewPR’s account unfortunately drew attention of people, a programme (whomever or whatever it is that’s behind these spam accounts) and swiftly, but with firm hand had to block accounts like @WearingDesigner.
Check who’s following you
If you want to keep your account clean from spammers, it’s worth the effort to check who’s is following you. In a way it’s rather fascinating how accounts like @WearingDesigner work. It, she, he, they have got themselves a plausible account name for a specific group of tweeps, in View PR’s case fashion related, a solid profile and if you don’t really read their timeline, content that even seems interessting. But a second look will reveal, i will dramatically call: The Ugly Truth. The timelines of these accounts are completely filled with retweets of real accounts and every 10 to 15 retweets you’ll see a tweet made by the account saying, and i quote: “Maximizing your current volume of Twitter Fans can skyrocket your website. This source is incredibly successful”, followed by a tinyurl. So far for fashion related content!
And another thing that i found quite amazing, is that spammers can sometimes have over one 1000 followers ‘hanging on their’ lips with just one tweet! How is this possible? Could it be that having that one extra follower to your account makes up for the extra spam accounts you attract, noise in your timeline and the raison d’être of these account? I sure hope not, lets not be vain and stay critical. Know what you tweet and who you are sharing it with!
