Copper is the new gold
A couple of weeks ago i already wrote about the new appreciation for copper by designers. Wallpaper Magazine even awarded designs made out of this material in the category Best use of Material for the Wallpaper Design awards 2011. Other fine examples are The Copper Cabinet and The Copper Lights by Dutch designer David Derksen. In his work he aims to show construction and the pure beauty of the material.
The Copper Cabinet is completely handmade and constructed out of just 0,1 millimetre thick copper foil. It’s because of this thin layer, it’s like looking at folded paper. The Copper Lights are a translation of the Copper Cabinet into more functional products.

Collectie Arnhem Product. We invite Nature
Collectie Arnhem Product is a project carried out by the third-year students Product Design of ArtEZ (Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, Holland) in which they, as a class, have to design, prdoduce, present and sell a theme based, cohesive collection of products. Collectie Arnhem was originally set up in 1999 for the Fashion Design students by fashion designer and alumnus Alexander van Slobbe. But after the annual success ten years in row, it finally got introduced in the Product Design discipline as well (hence the addition of Product in the title).
Every year the students decide on the theme and this year it’s We invite Nature, redefining the meaning of garden and living outside. The collection represents the inventive and creative forces of nature and the desire of the student-designers to take place within those processes. They have playfully interacted with nature by seducing and leading her. It was their intention to start a dialogue, not to force a monologue upon nature. And in my opinion they have succeeded rather well. Here are a few of my favorite designs. The complete Collectie Arnhem Product is for sale at Fashion & Design store Arnhem Coming Soon.
Spreading a Design Virus
Looking for an overall title to name her work Pieke Bergmans (1978), a Dutch product designer, came up with Design Virus. Spreading her vision and designs as a virus amongst the people. Her work is versatile in the materials she uses and the collaborations she engages, an encounter of pure materials and a tribute to crafts. Especially in the latter, and with respect altering these production processes to come to new forms and functions, she finds inspiration. A great example is her collection Crystal Virus; a series of crystal vases that were directly melted and sculpted on vintage tables and chairs. To speak in the terms of a virus, the furniture acted as hosts for the swollen crystal lumps.
A collaboration in 2010 with Studio Job, a very successful Dutch design studio based in Antwerp, resulted in a collection called Wonderlamp. Studio Job created monumental objects and scenes out of cast bronze such as a light torch, a cooking pan and a magic lamp. Bergmans filled the ‘gaps’ with her mouth-blown light bulbs, providing the light torch of a massive ray of light, the pan of an overcooking delight and the magic lamp of its missing genie.
Bergmans latest collection Water, among other work, will be presented next week in Milan during the Salone del Mobile. Water and glass show so many similarities, that you just might get tricked. So look closely next week!
Exhibition: Salone del Mobile - Milan, Italy
Date: 12 / 18 April 2011
Times: daily from 10 - 19 o’clock
Location: Galleria Design Virus, Via Tortona 12, 20144

These Dutch gents are also second price winners of the Green Fashion Competition that was held during the Amsterdam International Fashion Week in January 2011.
Three designs by Aldo Bakker have been awarded by Wallpaper* in the category ’best use of material’. The Watering can, as shown in the photo, soy pourer and candle holder are all made out of copper. What a luxury to water your plants and flowers witch this design! Check out who the other winners are of the Design Awards 2011 in the Wallpaper* February issue.

Sidetable Leggy Ann by dutch designer Jordan Artisan
Artisan turned turned three classic Queen Ann sidetables into one contemporary piece of furniture. It has a elegant and sassy feel to it, like a lady of stature in the Renaissance just flashing her bare leg.
BL-ij: Paper Gifts
BL-ij: Paper Gifts
Bibi de Lang is an independent graphic designer with her own label BL-ij (‘happy’ in English).
BL-ij designs postcards, stationary, wrapping paper and more tasteful paper goods. The products are made with love for nostalgia, but have a contemporary look and feel. A traditional, folkloric image is always the base of every design, reduced to a simple outline combined with pastel colors and patterns. It makes them a gift to give and to receive. Creating happy BL-ij moments for everyone!
In 2010 Bibi started a studio & paper shop-in-one where she created a whole BL-ij world filled with paper products that inspires her. Besides her own work, the paper store has the ultimate paper goodies from all over the world. From Japanese masking tape and stationery to notebooks from the Norwegian label Darling Clementine and much more. Every two to three months Bibi invites young designers to style and decorate the shop windows with their work, just as long as the work is made from paper. And if you would like a BL-ij postcard customized for a wedding or a baby card you can have that done in the studio.

Tante Ted: Boys only
Tante Ted (what translates to ‘Auntie Ted’) is an accessories label for boys only. Tante Ted produces textile accessories from bed linen and bedspreads to cushions, but also wall stickers. All collections are theme based and are very graphic. The colors use is mature, but with a childlike perkiness. The prints are simple, but strong. All the ingredients you need to turn a boy’s bedroom into a fresh and perky favorite place to stay. Tante Ted started as an successful single brand, but it’s founder Ted Nuyten, has such a strong sense and feel for what, beyond his own products, complements his vision that he has started to collaborate with other designers and taken up their products in Tante Ted’s webshop. Tante Ted is keen on spotting and combining that what initially would not be considered as a typical accessory for a kid’s bedroom.
